Your First Pelvic Health Visit—Without an Internal Exam

If you’re curious about pelvic floor therapy and not wanting an internal exam (or simply not ready), you’re not alone. Many people prefer to start their journey with a gentle, external approach—and that’s a completely valid choice. Here’s exactly what you can expect on your first visit, so there are no surprises.

1. We Start With Listening
Before we do anything physical, we talk. I’ll ask about your symptoms, your health history, and what you’d like to achieve. This is your time to share your story in your own words, and my time to really listen.

2. Education First
We’ll go over how the pelvic floor works, how it connects with the rest of your body, and what might be causing the symptoms you’re experiencing. The more you understand your body, the more power you have in your healing process.

3. External Movement and Posture Assessment
I may look at how you move—checking posture, breathing patterns, hip and core strength, and functional movements like squatting or walking. All of this gives us clues about how your pelvic floor is supported by the rest of your body.

4. Gentle External Palpation
If you’re comfortable, I may use light touch around your hips, lower back, and abdomen to feel for muscle tension, asymmetry, or tenderness. This helps me map out where we may need to focus first.

5. Building Your Plan
Before you leave, we’ll talk about what we found, set realistic goals, and start with exercises or strategies you can take home right away—so you can begin making progress from day one.

Pelvic floor therapy doesn’t have to feel intimidating. You’re always in control of what happens during your session, and there are many effective ways to begin your healing journey without an internal exam. This first visit is about building trust, understanding your body, and creating a plan that feels right for you.
